  • Thanks for the question. It can be challenging sometimes, can’t it! The easiest way is straight forward. If you see an upright regrowing hair, you then need to ask yourself immediately "Do I see see another URH hair close by or not?". If not, and that URH is all by itself, it’s probably not a URH that is part of a telogen effluvium. It's probably just an regrowing hair that happens on the scalp normally. Second, over time, URH get thicker and thicker whereas a true miniaturizing hair does not. Don’t forget that you can have URH that are miniaturizing too! For example, when a patient with AGA has a telogen effluvium. You can see URH that are upright regrowing miniaturizing hairs. The short answer is that if you are seeing alot of hairs nearby, this is probably an URH. One single hair has little meaning. You need to look for other hairs to gain understanding of the significance.
